Most AI products fail not because the technology didn't work, but because the goal was never clearly defined. "Add AI to the product" is not a goal. "Use AI to help users draft better proposals in half the time" is a goal. The difference matters for every decision that follows: what you build, how you evaluate it, and how you explain it to users.
The trap is trying to keep the goal broad so you have flexibility. Broad goals feel safe but they lead to unfocused products. When you're not clear about what the AI is fundamentally trying to do, every feature discussion becomes harder, every quality benchmark becomes arbitrary, and your users never quite understand what the product is for.
