Defining success before you start building is one of the most important things you can do — and one of the most commonly skipped. Without pre-defined success criteria, you end up assessing the MVP against a standard that conveniently shifts based on what actually happened. That's a recipe for building the wrong thing for a very long time.

The success criteria for an MVP are not about the product being perfect or widely adopted. They're about what the MVP needs to show — in user behaviour, willingness to pay, engagement, or retention — to justify the assumptions you've made and the investment you're about to commit. What result would tell you that the core hypothesis was right?
