A value proposition is the single clearest statement of what your product does, for whom, and why it's worth their attention. It's not marketing copy — it's a forcing function for your own thinking. If you can't articulate the value in plain language, you don't yet understand it clearly enough to build or sell it.
Most first drafts of value propositions are too vague or too broad. They describe features rather than outcomes, or they claim superiority without explaining the specific mechanism. The discipline here is to get specific: who exactly is the user, what exactly is the problem, and what exactly changes for them when it works.
