Almost every product team starts with the intention to keep things focused. Build the core. Resist the urge to add. Stay lean.
Almost every product, a year later, has features the founders didn’t originally plan for. The “small” additions added up. The roadmap got longer. The product became something that does many things — including some it didn’t need to.
That drift is called feature creep. It’s not a moment; it’s a slow process. Each individual decision feels reasonable. Together, they produce something heavier, harder to explain, and less focused than the team intended.
Avoiding feature creep isn’t about resisting every new idea. It’s about knowing why it happens, and putting small structural defences in place that hold up over time.
