Niceness is a quiet enemy of clear thinking
Most people are kind. When you tell someone about your project, they look for things they can say that won’t hurt your feelings. They smile, nod, and find encouraging words.
That’s a lovely social instinct. It’s also one of the most common reasons founders end up building the wrong thing.
“Polite interest” feels exactly like real interest from the inside. The conversation is warm. The reactions are positive. The person seems open to whatever you’re describing. You walk away feeling that the idea is connecting.
Then you launch — and the same people who nodded along quietly never become customers.
Learning to spot polite interest, and to design around it, is one of the most useful skills you can build in early product research.
