The most flattering sentence in product is also the most misleading

Almost every founder hears it at some point. Usually they say it themselves first.

“I would totally use this.”

It sounds like validation. The product solves a problem you have, or someone you respect has, or a friend has. They’re excited. They’d use it. So the idea must be onto something.

It’s a tempting signal. It’s also a weak one. Acted on without care, it’s one of the most reliable ways to spend months building the wrong thing.
