The difference between a product and a platform

Two very different shapes of company

Founders love the word “platform.” It sounds bigger, more ambitious, more durable than “product.”

But product and platform are genuinely different shapes of business. They behave differently, grow differently, and require different decisions early on. Confusing the two — calling something a platform when it’s really a product, or trying to act like a platform before you’ve earned the right — can quietly sink a project that would have worked fine in its true form.
