Burnout is a product risk, not just a personal one
Founders talk about burnout sometimes — usually as a personal struggle. It’s also a real risk to the business itself.
A burned-out founder makes worse decisions. A burned-out team produces lower-quality work. A burned-out leader signals to everyone that the company is run on exhaustion. Each of these costs the business in ways that don’t show up immediately but compound over time.
Treating sustainability as part of building isn’t self-indulgence. It’s how you keep building something good for long enough to make it matter. Sprints have a place; living in sprint mode for years rarely produces durable results.
Recognise the early signs
Burnout doesn’t usually arrive suddenly. It builds over months. The signs tend to be familiar.
