Your real competition isn't a list of products. It's whatever your target user does today when this problem comes up.
Some of that is other products. Some of it is workarounds. Some is paid services. Some is doing nothing at all. Until you know what users actually reach for, you can't know what your product really has to beat — or where the meaningful gap is to step into.
This exercise is about producing an honest map of how the problem is being handled today, across all those categories.
What to aim for
- A clear list of the direct products users currently consider or use.
- Adjacent or generic tools they stretch to fit.
- Manual workarounds they've invented.
- Service-based alternatives (people they hire or ask).
- An honest assessment of how many users simply do nothing.
