Now that you have a clearer picture of the problem and the landscape, it's time to pick the specific group of people you'll focus on first.

Narrowing is uncomfortable. You're aware your idea could one day serve many kinds of users, and choosing one feels like saying no to the others. But you can't serve everyone well at the start. The teams that grew to serve many audiences almost always started by serving one — extremely well.

This exercise produces a sharp definition of your target segment: specific enough to find, reach, and design for.

What to aim for

  • A specific role, context, and situation that defines who you're for first.
  • A clear sense of the problem trigger — when this problem comes up for them.
  • An honest description of how reachable this group is.
