Not all users are equal at launch. Early adopters are a very specific type of person — they tolerate bugs, fill in the gaps themselves, and give you the kind of feedback that shapes a product. Trying to appeal to everyone at this stage is one of the most common early mistakes. You end up with a message that resonates with nobody, and you spread your limited energy across too many channels.
The mistake most founders make is starting with a broad description — "small business owners" or "marketing teams" — and calling it targeting. That's not targeting. You need to get to a specific person: the one with the problem you solve today, who is active in a community you can reach, and who has enough pain to try something unproven.
