Conversion isn’t a dirty word

“Conversion” often gets used in ways that make founders uncomfortable. Pushy marketing tricks. Manipulative pop-ups. Fake countdown timers. Dark patterns that trap users into things they didn’t intend.

All of that is real. It’s also not what good conversion design has to be.

Conversion just means the moment a user takes the action you wanted — signing up, paying, upgrading, inviting someone, returning. Done well, conversion design helps users take actions they actually want to take, by removing barriers and providing useful nudges. It doesn’t trick anyone.

The challenge is doing it without crossing into manipulation. Good conversion work helps users move forward when they’re ready. Pushy work pretends they’re ready when they aren’t.
